HistoryMill Hill Quarries "have been in work for many years.....for two centuries or thereabouts, for roofing slate." extract Mines & Quarries Report to Duke of Bedford 1857 Company History"At a meeting held at the Guildhall in Tavistock, on 16th March 1803, to consider the best means for prosecuting the intended Navigation from Tavistock to Morwellham Quay, which included a Banch or Side-Cut to the slate quarries at Mill Hill.As this proposal for a branch to the "slate quarries at Mill Hill" was incorporated at the canal design stage, and became a reality by 1819, it is confident to presume the slate production was such as to warrant its inclusion. The quarry was closed by 1911.Mill Hill QuarryThe disused MILL HILL QUARRY was re-opened, and this company formed in 1959. Rustic and Blue stone produced for building and garden purposes soon became popular, often being referred to as "Tavistock Stone". Slate offcuts were also crushed and milled into fine powder for use as industrial filler. 
Longford QuarryIn 1984 LONGFORD QUARRY, located in the Dartmoor National Park, was purchased. Good quality building stone, paving and associated garden products, predominantly rustic in colour, is produced there. All sorted material is transported to Mill Hill Quarry for further dressing and marketing. Trevillett Quarry Trevillet Quarry at Tintagel, North Cornwall, was acquired in 1990. It extracts from the Upper Delabole Slate, Upper Devonian Beds ( as defined in 'Memoirs of the Geological Survey of Great Britain 1973' ) and produces good quality blue-grey roofing slates.GeologyAll 3 quarries are in Upper Devonian Slate with Trevillett quarrying the Upper Delabole Slate Beds of same.
